The Clay Studio
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
All Kiln Services started work at the new Clay Studio building in January 2022, without heat (and at first without lighting!) moving and setting electric kilns.
We handled the rigging and installation of all their kilns and kiln ventilation ducting for both gas and electric kilns. AKS also set up the other studio equipment and its assembly including assorted potter’s wheels, ware carts, air filtration devices, clay mixers, pugmills, and custom studio fabrication (sink counters, waterproofing panels, etc.
19 L&L electric, top loaders, front loaders and Da Vinci squares.
3 Bailey gas reduction kilns, one of which is a soda kiln.
1 Blaauw gas kiln (programmed and final testing by Blaauw)
2 Laguna spray booths
Clay mixers, pug mills, countless potters’ wheels, and other studio accessories and specialty equipment.
The working process at The Clay Studio involved:
Collaboration with owners, building trades, architects, engineers, and equipment vendors.
Specialty material acquisition and on site fabrication.
Coordination with kiln and equipment manufacturers and building trades and city utility inspection.
Managing and receiving commercial freight for kilns both nationally and intercontinentally and the subsequent storage, rigging, and setting of the kilns.
Kiln and equipment testing, trouble-shooting, special fabrication, and one-off installations.
The kiln and equipment project at The Clay Studio is ongoing and will require us to work closely with The Clay Studio management, the general contractor, and all of the new artists and students of the space to tweak and adjust equipment as needed.
